Tips for online play:

1. Headers - tap the header button once to initiate targetted player and then hold the button with a direction - this works even better on corners with the jostle button.
2. Shots - never let the bar build up to full, half way is preferable but two medium length taps are good for volleys and rebound goals.
3. Defending - always use a sweeper, he cuts out the cut back goals you see so often in most games.
4. Defending - Use centre backs with defensive runs placed as far back as they will go - this makes a through ball goal much harder to achieve and also protects you from fast counter attacks.
5. Defending - When selecting the closest defender next to the ball never press backwards on the stick always fin front of the advancing player to avoid easy run throughs.
6. Pressure - I keep this at 0 but 10 to 20 is fine as it gives you SO MUCH time on the ball and counteracts high pressure abusers, leads to more open play and passing play.
7. Agression - Put it at 100, the refs are lalalala and everyone else does or you will be jostled off the ball endlessly.
8. Play at least 3 up front, I prefer 4, Striker to Center Forward is a must for quick interplay. set them to make runs up, up left, up right, left, etc all different to confuse defence.
9. Passing - set it to 100 players constantly make runs (confusing defence) and keep it free form/safe/short as there will usually be a player to lay off to, especially is low pressure is chosen, helps against high pressure absuers.
10. R1 button - use it - pass around your centre backs and instigate runs with R1 which give you more passing options and creates gaps.
11. L1 + x, the most underated move in the game, pass around your midefield with this move to really torment their defence, ally it to a deft through ball for great wing play.
12. Crossing - Never just cross the ball, cut back inside defender and cross, it puts the defenders on the back foot and gives a better percentage of goals from forwards.
13. Crossing - Use SEMI get INSIDE the box making a diagonal run and then single tap the cross button for easy FORWARDS goals. The closer you get to the byline the better....
14. Chip the keeper on 1v1, everyone knows it works, most times.
15. Use tele camera full zoom out, full height for a full view of the pitch and greater appreciation of player/opponent positioning.
16. Defending - DO NOT CHASE - don't chase the attacker, make a run parallel to him, if he is coming wide you will get to the keeper faster than he will forcing him to make a lalalala shot from an acute angle, if you have a sweeper he can't cut the ball back for an easy goal.
17. The finesse shot is useless online, takes too much time, don't use it.
18. Centre forward make runs at defence, press L1 + X twice for a perfect one two from striker, preactice this in the arena it is DEADLY!
19. NEVER EVER EVER EVER pass to the first defender from goalkeeper, use a half power goal kick from keeper to reach further up the field, if you muck it up at least your sweeper can cover you.
20. BUILD UP PLAY - put it to 100, you will score on corner clearences and quick wing play, most people do not have their defenders making backward defensive runs, and with 4 forwards making offensive fast build up runs you will swamp them and they will panic and you WILL score.
21. You can use custom tactics online, it's no secret, edit them offline and choose them from the D-Pad down in game.
22. Free kicks - 25yards - hold R1 aim the player well outside the wall, power up to half way or thereabouts, press forward and inside on left stick eh voila a Ronaldo special with power and bend - adjust power for distance.
23. This is not a glitch! 40 to 50 yard free kicks, hold r1 and sqaure button aim well outside post let it rip full power while pusing up and left on left stick. More than once it has bounced in front of keeper and over his head or for a deflection easy goal. Plus it's funny as lalalala!
24. Corners - Aim for outside of penalty box, nearest to you, use 3/4 to full power with full left swerve on and use Heading tip for scorching forcefull headed goals. Practice this in the arena!
25. Hoof it - play lob ball as manual, use L1 plus square to hoof the ball up the pitch when you are under pressure, sure it's unpredictbale but i once saw Gallas clear the ball from his six yard box to the opposition corner flag. One minor caveat: it takes longer to build up the power on manual so you need to have some space unlike assisted. Occasionally your forward gets on the end of it for a legend wait for it ary volley into the oppositions top corner.
26. NOT A GLITCH - when you have a throw in midway from the centre line to the opposition goal line throw to a free player and use L1 + square with the left stick held down diagonally and up towards the goal. I have scored numerous top corner lobs with this or gotten on to the end of it with a well placed volley. It is a laugh also beacuse the ball seems to gain extra speed with the spin and a goal with it leaves the opponent gasping in exasperation at the kick off.
27. Use the D-Pad to select Ultra Offensive when you get a corner (as long as you ahve a sweeper) it forces the players in and around the box to go more aggressively for the ball. I reckon it increases the percentage of goals I get from corner. Immeadiatley reset it though....
28. Tips 'n Tricks http://www.fifa-community.com/index.php/tutorials/tips-n-tricks Excellent resource!
29. Easy goals from crosses. Use 2 strikers in your formation get to the following point marked by the X and tap the cross button once or twice on semi crossing, et voila Striker gets a top corner header. Works so often it is probably a glitch so we should all know about it. The box shows the optimum area for crossing....Crosses from the wing very rarley work, diagonal runs as close to by line are FAR more effective....

30. Cut out cut back and through ball goals easily. Use one of your 4 defenders on standard formation as a sweeper with a defensive run. Simples.....
31. If you come up against BARCELONA or REAL MADRID use high pressure formation with a sweeper and CHELSEA who wipe the floor with these 2.....I have never lost with CHELSEA against these so called wonder teams. BOSWINGA is a devine sweeper....
32. Think 2 passes at least ahead. Often notice how good players manage to ping pong it about from defence to a goal in 6 seconds. They use short safe passing and look ahead of the first pass. Noobs tend to think of only the first pass and then look for the second, ELITE look around as they recieve the ball and have a course plotted before the first pass....It is a hard skill to master but essential if you are going to be competitive...use Barcelona for easy ping pongorama!!!!
33. If you find you are having few scoring chances in a match switch up one to more offensive or ultra offensive. If you are letting in goals in a match switch down to defensive. I use the slider constantly in a game and it does work wonders....
34. If you have the cojones for it, use your goalie to run up the left hand side of the pitch and launch a full power lobbed through ball. It's a proven fact that most defenses in Fifa 10 do not protect the wings much and more often than no you will find your winger in an advanced position. Obviously this is risky but it does work...
35:Fifa engine is in layman terms based on reaction speed to the server. There are 3 ways to increase your reaction speed artificially.

1. always play with the usb cable connected.
2. always attach ethernet directly to router.
3. always attach router to master socket.

I have a nifty program that records PS3 button press reaction times on an Apache server. With these you recieve a 10 - 100 millisecond advantage over bluetooth and telephone extensions. In Fifa that is quite an advantage. It is essentially like having a super ping...and we know what that means for COD4!!!

Try it, it works, around 90% of those who try it notice the diff a lot!

The formation:

I use free form for attack, organised for cover defence, build up play 100%, passing up very high for more forward runs, creativity. Not really messed with shooting crossing thing, pretty much default.

Arrows are simply player runs, not messed with attitude thing at all. If you are level 19 and only lost 4 times you don't need my tips!!!

This is a rookie setup to stop through ball and cut back goals. It is designed to soak up pressure. But with a build up of 100%, 100% passing and short/safe passing you soak up the pressure and break fast on the counter attack with plenty up front to SWAMP the opponent.

As I say be prepared to soak up the pressure as the sweeper keeps the other players onside but they have to resort to long shots as passes into the box are useless for them and the sweeper cuts out all through balls and passes across the defence.

If you want to step it up a level, just put a sweeper with a defensive run and your standard formation but you will be a wee bit more open to through balls and across the box passes....
As an experiment just use your normal formation but switch the fastest LB or LWB to sweeper. Your goals against will fall dramtically. Cross the box goals are like through balls in Fifa09 and low shots in Fifa08, the most widely scored goals...

Different opinion:
Set Aggression to 100 if you want your defense to be dismantled by 1-2 passes and hold your breath everytime an opponent plays an aerial throughball. I guess I'm more cautious in my approach to the game because I hate giving up cheap goals but I definately don't agree with settting agression to 100 unless your opponent is completely clueless.

I also don't agree with holding the L1 button and having players make senseless runs downfield. This is noob style of play. Use one-twos in sensible situations like when your opponent is coming at your attacker from an angle. Or if it looks like your opponents defender has his momentum moving towards your attacker.

I also believe that you SHOULD chase the attacker if the numbers are in your favor. For instance if you have 4 defenders vs. 2 strikers as a striker recieves a pass from midfield you should definitely pressure him. Certainly don't give him space and time to let his players come up in support, get the ball out of the danger area!

I feel that pressure should be in the 50's-80's. When pressure is too low your opponent will have too easy a time bringing the ball up the pitch after winning possession. Keep pressure reasonable high and have your player defend from the front. If your opponent makes a mistake transitioning from defense to offense you'll be in for some easy goals.

And by the way if you guys are getting knocked off the ball a lot you should try to turn the defender by shielding the ball or using close control/skill dribble, otherwise pass it to a teammate before the defender engages the attacker. Defenders in this game can seem to be overly physical with attackers but there are many ways to cope with that.

Another different opinion:

This worked out so good for me online and offline.

I play with Barcelona so (stuff all you haters) So I have custom to everything you said but I have bit more altered version of my formation.

...........................SW. (TOURE).................
....................RCB.(puyol)...............LCB( Pique)
RB (alvez).................
............................CDM (Keita)................

................RCM.(Xavi)........................ ..

.................................................. .LCM (Iniesta)

RW.(Messi)...............................

.........................CF (Zlatan).....................
...................................ST(Henry)...... .......

I have Toure defense arrow go to the left to cover if geting flanked and Pique automaticly Covers left if the ball shifts there but is majority of the time in the mid.

I have all ULTRA DEFENSE including my CDM. I have my attackers on high attack Specially Zlatan and Messi.

I have won 20 games in a row and conceded 3 goals in those 20 games (all three goals were deflections or some sort of mistake on defense when I tried to clear it).

I have been shutting people out in the top 100 with ease and winning 4-1 or more.

One thing I have noticed is as soon as my team scores they all defend as one Which I absolutely love and when they attack they are so quick on the counter its insane. Specially Iniesta and XavI ( I just wish they didn't get pushed around so much by even walcot which doesnt make sense fix this EA) Xavi and Iniesta are two of the best midfielders in the world but in this game they get pushed around as if they are babies.

Its going brilliant and my confidence is insanely high

More tips:

Find a good mix of when to pressure them/rush them and when to stay off.
Alot of the time you cann tell when they are going to do a through ball, when they are looking for
it stay off the man they will either a) pass it to early and you will intercept
b) keep dribbling with ball while waiting for a better opportunity eventually making it easier for you to tackle
them or their attack breaks down
c) they will try to play the one two thinking that you will rush the original guy giving them a headstart on the run
stay off them/ahead of them and when they play the one two back to the original player you will intercept
also on defence run parrallel to them so you can cut them off from turning back inside as they will think you will overshoot them if they stop/cut back can also intercept passes
master the art of jockeying.
when in the box hold down X and O at the same time getting two players in their way
all the above I call the "predicatble defence" or the "smart defence" where you are constantly predicting their next move/run/pass allowing yourself to cut them off. its a great mix of
laying off them and applying the right pressure at the right time

quick passing and lots of it, dribble forward when you have space while making players make runs
think one step ahead, ie when your passing it to your player right away look to see who you will pass to next
as you will find alot of your players are making runs at this point, plus if youve got lag and your reactions
are delayed this will give you more time by pressing buttons early
shooting - aim for corners and only tap it.
if your on a tight angle hit it hard so the goalie will put it away for a corner
better to win a corner then to loose the ball by trying to do an impossible cutback/dribble
take your time in the box dont just thrash the shoot button straight away!
do small cross inside the box while your strikers are still going forward. this works really well.

Gameplay Tip: Beating Pressure Defense Online

Utilizing your target man properly is a good way to counteract pressure defense. When making a pass downfield to a teammate facing away from the opposing goal tap the the sprint button a few times upon receiving the pass. This shields the ball, giving you some extra time while holding off opposing defenders coming in from behind. If the defender coming in from behind engages your attacker and tries to make a tackle rather than hold his ground look closely at which side he is on. If he is on the left dribble to the right, if he is on the right dribble to the left. And when you dribble away from the defender dribble at a regular jog don't sprint or use the skill dribble button, don't use the right stick either.

I’ve found this to be an extremely effective maneuver in keeping high pressure abusers at bay and it really allows you to dominate possession in the attacking third. The key to doing this move properly is to take your time. A lot of times when people see a defender running toward their attacker from behind there first instinct is to run away from the defender or try to play a one-two pass but this maneuver is usually more effective than playing a one-two because once you beat the defender on the turn there is usually a lot of space ahead of you.

It is important to make sure that the defender engages the attacker before you turn. If you turn too early the defender will win the ball every time. Don't feel pressured and make sure to take your time when you have the ball shielded because you will have more time than you think.

Gameplay Tip: Dribbling, the secret to close control in FIFA 10

The L1 button should be called the “close control” button on offense. It is very effective when trying to turn a defender or trying to cut back inside towards the center of the field. As you are dribbling hold the L1 button when you’re turning as a defender is closing in on you, this button makes your player make his turns sharper and more acute (smaller) and gives you a better chance of getting around a defender. (This is especially useful when there is not enough space to do a skill move or if you are unable to face up your opponent to use the skill dribble) Once you start using the L1 button while dibbling you’ll be able to get by defenders rushing at you even in tight spaces. It’s another way to keep pressure abusers at bay and force your opponent to be more cautious on defense.

I know that some of you guys already know about this and it’s not new information, but some people don’t know how effective it is and when it should be used. The in game dribbling tutorial doesn’t do a good job describing the function of the L1 button. The tutorial describes this button as being used to perform a hard stop, but the only time you ever perform a hard stop when using this button is when you’re sprinting and try to make a turn of 45° or greater. If your player is moving at a jog this button won’t bring him to a stop, rather it will make your player make his turns sharper and with more control, making your player much more difficult to tackle as you maneuver him around the defense.

Gameplay Tip: Important information about custom tactics.

I'm guessing that a a lot of players on here are like me and get frustrated about how this game seems to drastically change momentum in favor of one team in the middle of the game especially when facing opponents online. After playing around with tactical settings for a while I've come to realized that they are extremely important to how well your team plays on the pitch, especially when it comes to defending. Having the proper
tactical setting is the difference between keeping a clean sheet and allowing an abundance goals.

Everyone talks about pressure and aggression but the most important tactical setting for defense is team width. If you notice that your opponent is constantly trying to work shooting opporunities up the middle then you'll want to use a tactic that has your team width set to 1 which keeps your defenders narrow and clogs up the middle of the pitch. If you notice that your opponent keeps working the ball down the sideline and is spamming you with crosses then you'll want to use a custom tactic that has you width set higher (maybe 70, but not too high because it's still much more difficult to score from a cross than it is to score from a shot in the box).

If you don't have your custom tactics set up I suggest you set them up and start using them. Have one custom tactic with team width set to 1 and another with team width set somewhere between 50-70. Alternate between those two tactics based on how your opponent is attacking you. You'll become much more successful in defending and the clean sheets will pile up.

The more I learn about the intricacies of this game the more I appreciate it. It really is a thinking man's game.

Gameplay Tip: Stopping one-two abusers and aerial throughballs

After playing a few online games today and being totally dismantled by a few one-two abusers I decided to check my custom tactics and to my surprise the team aggression for defense was set to 60. Once I changed aggression back to zero I was able to put an end to the one-two abuse and force my opponents to play real football.

Anyway my tip is to make sure that you have a custom tactic on hand with team aggression set to a very low number (less than 32) in case you run into a one-two abuser or an aerial through ball abuser. Having team aggression set to a low number has the CPU A.I. play contain defense, which means that they will track runs and make sure to stay between their man and the goal. The attackers won’t be able to get open behind the defense on one-two attempts even if your opponent switches to an ultra offensive mentality. Low aggression is also effective in stopping the aerial throughballs which seems to be another method of attack that high level players like to abuse.

Gameplay Tip: Preventing Breakaways

This may seem obvious but I’m going to post it anyway. If you want to prevent your opponent from getting easy breakaways and have your defenders stay on their marking assignment set your team pressure to any number below 32 and aggression to any number below 20. Also set your defensive line to cover. These settings ensure that your players will stay behind their marking assignment and not attempt any unnecessary double teams on defense. (Personally I trust my own judgment when it comes to attempting double teams a lot more than the CPU A.I.) When aggression is set too high your defenders will attempt double teams even in the attacking third which tends to leave your defense scattered, out of position, and vulnerable to easy breakaways. If you feel the need to set your aggression high then make sure you keep team width high as well or else attacking wingers are going to have lots of space on the touchline to receive passes and make runs for easy crosses into the box. The worst possible defensive combination you could use is low team width and high team aggression, especially when the opponent is trying to attack from the wings.

High pressure abusive tactics:

Tip1: use 4-2-3-1 (6-0-4)
Tip2: set your 2DMs with straight defensive runs.
Tip3: set your 4backs with straight defensive runs.
Tip4: set your 4backs+2DMs with low attack rates and high defense rates.
Tip5: your 4 upfront should be: LW-CF-ST-RW
Tip6: set your 4 upfront with ofensive runs. LW+RW should have cut-in runs.
Tip7: set your 4 upftont with high attack and low defense rates.
Tip8: custom tactics:
built up speed: >70
passing: ~60
chance creation: >70
crosses: >50
shooting: doestn matter - >70
pressure: >80
aggression: >70
width: <30
cover
all free form
Tip9: to defend just run straight back with your DMs.
Tip10: use pressure with your DMs only if possible.
Tip11: pressuring with all your might is also possible when you have some momentum.
Tip12: 1-2 with your 4 upfront.
Tip13: if your opponent has a strong defense, pass back to your DMs and run forward with them (your DM will have a lot of space because he comes from behind)
Tip14: always try to integrate your CF into your play, he is your most important player upfront
Tip15: most killerpasses will come from your CF - so use someone fast-agile with good passing skills.

this style of play has 1 weakness - you are completly open over the wings, because your LB and RB WONT mark your opponents Wingers.
i havent found out yet how to fix this, but i will try width 50-60 today and maybe offside-trap too..
